Rep. Summers & Partners Recognize Black Maternal Health Week

Who: State Representative Zakiya Summers, Mississippi Black Women’s Roundtable, Mom.Me, Six Dimensions, Central Mississippi Chapter of National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Community Advocates and Healthcare Leaders


What: In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week (April 11–17, 2025), Representative Zakiya Summers and a coalition of organizations and individuals will host a press conference and proclamation presentation to raise awareness about the Black maternal health crisis and uplift solutions as part of Black Maternal Health Week. The event will share powerful testimonials about the life altering consequences that come from equitable maternal healthcare access, highlighting the urgent need for policy action to eliminate racial disparities in maternal outcomes in Mississippi.


When: Monday, April 14, 2025 at 11 a.m. 


Where: Mississippi State Capitol, 2nd floor Rotunda


Why: Black women in Mississippi are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. This press conference will spotlight the state’s maternal health crisis, celebrate the work of Black-led organizations and recent legislative actions, and issue a call to action for comprehensive and just maternal health policies.
