My Priorities for Protecting the Vote in Mississippi and how you can help

Dear Friends,
I want to begin by saying how proud I am of the voters who made their voices heard in Tuesday's election, particularly here in Mississippi.
Despite the irregularities and obstacles some encountered, people persevered. They showed up, stood in line, asked questions and did what was necessary to participate in our democracy. I don't take that determination lightly.
As a former Hinds County election commissioner and a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, I've seen election administration from both sides. I understand the importance of maintaining accurate voter rolls, and I know how frustrating it can be when an eligible voter arrives at the polls only to discover a problem with their registration.
That experience continues to shape my legislative priorities.
One of my first priorities in the 2027 legislative session will be addressing Mississippi's use of credit-reporting data to verify voter addresses.
In 2023, the Legislature passed House Bill 1310, which took effect January 1, 2024, and expanded the state's voter-roll maintenance procedures. In July 2025, the Secretary of State's Office announced a partnership with Experian, one of the nation's major credit-reporting companies, to help identify possible changes in voters' addresses.
Subsequent reporting by Mississippi Today found that at least 50,000 Mississippi voters had been placed on inactive status following address discrepancies involving that data.
Think about what that means for an eligible voter who has taken the time to go to the polls, only to learn that their registration has been flagged and they may have to cast an affidavit ballot.
We have a responsibility to maintain accurate voter rolls. We also have a responsibility to make sure the methods used are fair, reliable and do not create unnecessary obstacles for eligible voters.
I intend to introduce legislation removing the statutory authority to use commercial credit-reporting information to verify voter addresses.
And that is only one of the changes I plan to pursue.
I also intend to advance legislation that:
Improves access to voter registration by requiring the Mississippi Department of Public Safety to provide registration forms to eligible residents who indicate they want to register.
Establishes online voter registration so eligible Mississippians can register through a secure, accessible online process.
Creates early voting opportunities to give Mississippians greater flexibility in when they cast their ballots.
These are practical solutions to problems that affect real people. They deserve thoughtful consideration and meaningful action.
We are also preparing for the possibility of a special legislative session concerning mid-decade redistricting. I will continue monitoring those developments and advocating for fair representation as decisions are made about Mississippi's legislative districts.
Tuesday's election reminded me of the determination of voters and the importance of remaining engaged in the decisions that affect our communities.
I am preparing to return to the State Capitol with these priorities firmly in mind. I will continue listening to constituents, working with my colleagues and pursuing legislation that strengthens our election system.

With appreciation,
Rep. Zakiya Summers
Mississippi House District 68
