Celebrating the 31st Annual For My People Awards at Jackson State University

I am deeply honored to be named a recipient of the 31st Annual For My People Awards, presented by the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University. The awards luncheon will take place on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. in the JSU Student Center Ballroom.

Since 1996, the For My People Awards have recognized individuals and institutions whose work has made an indelible contribution to African American history and culture. Rooted in the legacy of poet and scholar Margaret Walker, the awards celebrate leadership that reflects intellectual rigor, cultural preservation, and community-centered activism.

This year’s distinguished honorees include former State Representative Alyce Clarke, civil rights scholar Daphne Chamberlain, the Mississippi Humanities Council, and myself.

I am especially humbled to receive the For My People – Doris Derby Legacy Award, which is presented to a new generation of leaders continuing the rich academic, artistic, and activist traditions of African Americans in Mississippi. To be recognized in this way—particularly in West Jackson, in proximity to Jackson State University, and among leaders whose work has shaped generations—is profoundly meaningful.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Daphne Chamberlain. The program will also include remarks from JSU administrators and special guests, along with performances by the JSU Chorale. The MLK Convocation is free and open to the public.

Together, these events offer a powerful morning of reflection, remembrance, and celebration—honoring the legacy of Dr. King while uplifting those who continue the work of justice, culture, and community leadership today.

I hope you will join us at Jackson State University for this meaningful day.
